He was born Sept. 24, 1918 in Harper, the eldest son of William and Vevia (Gould) Newton. He attended public schools in Powell Butte and Redmond and spent most of his life in Central Oregon. He served in the Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1943. Working in the shipyards in Portland, he met Arlene Wentworth and they married in 1945. The couple moved to Bend where he worked in the lumber industry for many years in Bend and Redmond. After retirement, he was an active member of the Grange in Redmond, where he served as master. He was also active in the development of the center for senior citizens in the Redmond area and was on the board for Central Oregon Council on Aging. After his wife’s death, James married Genevieve Thomas in 1988. They moved to Dufur in 1990 and finally to The Dalles in 1998 to be near his son and daughter-in-law. He continued his active grange membership in both locations. He enjoyed hunting and fishing for many years and in later years enjoyed gardening and reading. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; son Jim and Linda Newton, The Dalles; step-son Mike and his wife Judi Newton, Sherwood; grandsons Bradly, Newberg; and Tygh and Ambria, Forest Grove; sisters Grace and her husband Carl Mumm, Portland; Fannie McArdle, Bend; brother Frank and his wife Betty, Sauvie Island; three step-grandsons; five step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Arlene and sisters Bessie Fisher and Averill Benfield. A memorial service will be held at the Redmond Grange on Nov. 29, 2004 at 2 p.m. Rev. Vern Arledge will preside. There will also be a private family gathering and his ashes will be placed at Deschutes Memorial Chapel and Gardens in Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the Redmond Senior Center, 325 NW Dogwood St, Redmond, OR 97756 or to the Redmond Grange, South Canal Avenue, Redmond, OR 97756 or to Mid-Columbia Senior Center, 1112 West 9th St., The Dalles, OR. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial in The Dalles.
