She was born in Grass Valley, July 16, 1917. She was the first child of Ellen and Dean Reynolds and the sister of Gene Reynolds. She attended grade school and high school in Grass Valley. Following graduation from high school in June 1934, she spent a year at home studying music. In fall 1935 she enrolled in the Oregon Normal School in Monmouth, where she studied education. Upon graduation in 1937, she accepted a teaching position in the music department at Frankton School in Hood River, where she taught and directed the school band. She married Warren Elliott in 1939, who was teaching music in Hood River as well. During the war they moved to San Diego, Calif., where her husband was stationed in the Navy and their daughter, Sandra, was born in 1944. When the war ended they moved to Vancouver, Wash., where Carol was born in 1946. In 1953 they moved to Medford, where she taught in a private kindergarten for several years. The family moved to Portland in 1953, where she taught at St. Helen’s Hall. In 1968 she married Arthur Ness and they moved to Bellevue, Wash., where they lived until 1998. She was a member of Broadmoor Country Club in Seattle, and was on the women’s golf team. She was an accomplished pianist, an avid gardener and loved flowers, especially her dahlias. She is survived by her two daughters: Sandra Barnett, Orinda, Calif.; and Carol Foster, Portland; two granddaughters, Jennifer Barnett, Orinda, Calif.; and Sarah Foster, Portland; brother Gene Reynolds, The Dalles; husband Arthur Ness, Lake Havasu, Ariz.; and step-children Steve Ness, Stuart Ness and Susie Marceau, of Portland and Seattle. Graveside services will be held at Threemile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery formerly known as Parklawn Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004 at 11 a.m. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 1311 NW 21st Ave., Portland, OR 97209.
