She was born in Des Moines, Iowa, March 26, 1937, the eldest of three children to Sherman and Ruth (Waller) Burris. The family later moved to Salem where she attended elementary and secondary school, graduating in 1955. She married John Cavender in 1955, in Salem and they later divorced. She married Ronald Nelson, June 13, 1981, in LaGrande and moved to The Dalles. She graduated from Western Oregon State College, earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Her teaching career spanned many years. She served as the educational therapist at Mid-Columbia Child and Family Center then worked as the child and family coordinator at the Early Childhood Intervention Program. She retired in 1997, from her extended career in professional education to pursue her many and varied interests. She loved to travel. She and her husband traveled to China, Mexico, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. She also had the opportunity to visit France, Peru, Bolivia, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Egypt and the Holy Lands. She and her husband greatly enjoyed attending Rendezvous, and both were members of Vernonia Muzzleloaders Club. She won several awards for marksmanship in muzzleloader firearm competitive shooting. She was very active in The Dalles Area Habitat for Humanity. She served on the original board of directors, serving with her husband, as chairpersons for the partnership committee. She served as partner for three of the Habitat families, providing support and guidance as they were helping build their homes. She also served as a volunteer at the building site, and provided service in many other areas of the work. She took Spanish lessons and became fluent in the language so that she could be a more effective partner when language was a barrier. She had many hobbies: painting (oil and watercolor), tap dancing, volunteer counseling, gardening, Spanish, and reading, to mention a few. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, St. Vincent dePaul Society, Bread and Blessings, Celilo Cancer Support Group and an outreach volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She belonged to two Bible study groups and a book club. She is survived by her husband, Ron, The Dalles; her children: John Scott Cavender and wife, Teresa, and Jodi Allen and husband, Christopher, all of LaComb; and Daniel Nelson and wife, Lori, The Dalles; grandchildren: Brant Hoover, Cristofer Cavender, Daniel Allen, Krystal Meister and Benjamin Nelson; great-grandchild, Gracie Jane Allen; her mother, Ruth Connelly and sisters, Joyce Hill and Linda Davis, all of Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home from 2 p.m. through the recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. at St Peter’s Catholic Church on Saturday, Jan. 10, with Rev. Joseph Kelbel as celebrant. Private cremation will follow at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with inurnment at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery Columbarium. Remembrances may be made to The Dalles Area Habitat for Humanity, Box 378, The Dalles.
