Nelson, 84, a resident of Sportsman’s Park near Wamic died at the Oregon Veterans Home on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003 after a brief illness. He had resided at the OVH for a year. He was born Sept. 12, 1919 in Baker City, the oldest of two sons to Clato Young and Elsie Nelson. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific and was a member of the American Legion for more than 50 years. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, gardening and dancing. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1972 and then was employed by C.Y.’s House of Samples for five years. He retired to Sportsman’s Park and became a snowbird and traveled to Arizona where some years later he met and married his wife, Lois. He is survived by his wife, Lois, Sportsman’s Park; four children, Vern Nelson Jr. and his wife, Maggie, Portland; Roger and Jeff Nelson, both of Gresham; and Michael Nelson, Forest Grove; granddaughters, Stephanie, Emily, Natasha and Whitney, and his brother, C. Y. Nelson and his wife, Donna. Memorials may be made to the Oregon Veterans Home, 700 Veterans Drive, The Dalles, OR 97058. His request was that no flowers be sent. Memorial services will be held at the Wamic American Legion Post No. 135 on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. with a potluck to follow.
