The Dalles Chronicle, September 13, 2005
     Nesta Marie Neary, 74, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local 
hospital Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005. 
     She was born on Sept. 21, 1930, in Kellogg, Idaho, the oldest of four 
children to Joseph and Rose Marie (Calabretta) Basta. She was raised in Walla 
Walla, Wash., and in 1949 graduated from high school there. Following 
graduation, she worked at the Bon Marche in Walla Walla for six years. 
     She met Eugene Anthony Neary in Walla Walla, and they were married May 
15, 1955, at St. Francis of Assissi Church in Walla Walla. After their 
marriage, they lived in several places as her husband worked as a power house 
foreman on the dams along the Columbia River. In 1968, they settled in The 
Dalles, where she was a homemaker, raising their five children.
     She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the Altar Society and loved 
being a mom and grandmother. She also enjoyed doing crosswords and word 
puzzles.
     She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Eugene Neary; her children 
and their families, Deborah Rose Burton, Hillsboro, and her children, Chase 
and Daniel Thompson; Teresa Patton and her husband, Duane, The Dalles and 
their children, Alex, Grace, Ben and Claire; Joana Marie Stanek and her 
husband, Bob, The Dalles, and their children, Aaron and Andrew; Michael Eugene 
Neary, The Dalles; her mother, Rose Marie Basta, Walla Walla; her sister, 
Pauline Bauman, Condon; her brother, Joseph Basta Jr., Walla Walla; her aunts, 
Barbara Calabrett, Carmella Purjue and Marion Duff, and numerous nieces and 
nephews. 
     She was preceded in death by her son, Patrick Joseph Neary, a brother, 
Anthony Basta and her father, Joseph Basta.
     Memorial services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home 
at noon, on Saturday, Sept. 24.
