Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 16, 2006, 11:04 pm The Dalles Chronicle, November 23, 2005 Juanita Pearl Moss, 76, died Nov. 22, 2005 at St. Elizabeth Care Center in Baker City. She was born Jan. 10, 1929, in Caldwell, Idaho, to Orel L. Griggs and Velma Stevens Griggs. She married Christian John Pfeifer in January 1946, had a daughter, Saundra and divorced in November 1947. She married Elden Rufus Deel in December 1947. He had two sons from a previous marriage, Jerold and Howard. Together, the couple had two children, Michael and Marilyn. Her husband died in December 1969. She then married Donald C. Moss on Aug. 25, 1972. He also had two children from a previous marriage, Donna and Dwaine. In her earlier life with Elden Deel, she traveled across the United States and in Canada as he worked on the gas pipeline. In 1956, they purchased a farm int he little community of Smock Prairie in southern Wasco County. She worked on the farm beside her husband, or with the children, as her husband continued to work away from home. She enjoyed raising huge gardens, canning and freezing vegetables and fruits, picking wild blackberries and was always whistling or singing while performing her chores. There were always baby animals in the house or nearby to tend and she raised chickens and rabbits to sustain the family needs. She loved cooking, baking, sewing clothing, making overall quilt tops and crocheting for her children and grandchildren. During her 33 years with Donald Moss, she enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and many family adventures. With her husband, she made many macrame chairs and designed plastic flowers from six-pack pop can holders, some of which decorate her grandmother’s grave today. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, sister, first and second husbands, a step-granddaughter, a step-grandson, a niece and a nephew. Survivors include her husband, Don, Baker City; three brothers, Stanley Griggs and his wife, Aleta, Baker City; Ernest Griggs, Laurel, Md.; and Carroll and his wife, Lucy, Casa Grande, Ariz.; seven children, Jerold Deel and his wife, Majel, Portland; Howard Deel and his wife, Cindy, N. Manchester, Ind.; Saundra and her husband, Ivan Harry Bork, Baker City; Michael Deel and his wife, Sandy, Oregon City; Donna Tollefson, Terrebonne; Dwaine Moss, Fontana, Calif.; and Marilyn Deel, Baker City; grandchildren Howard, Jeroldine, Leanna, Elden, Matthew, Dianna, Mindy, Carl, Crystal, Katrina, Jesica, DJ, Michelle and Brandon; numerous great-grandchildren. At her request, there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers.
