     Eugene “Gene” Russell Morrow, 75, a former resident of The Dalles, died 
in Newport on Jan. 21, 2005.
     He retired at the end of the 1999 season after 45 years as head football 
coach at Newport High School. He holds the record as the second winningest 
football coach in the history of Oregon high school sports and the only person 
in the nation to dedicate a 45-year coaching career to the same school.
     Over the years his achievements and honors were too numerous to count.    
Sportswriters called him “The Dean of Oregon High School Coaches.”.
     The latest accolades came at the Oregon State/USC football game in 
Corvallis. He was honored at half-time with a broadcasted biography and 
display of pictures covering his football career from high school quarterback 
for The Dalles High School’s 1947 champions, quarterback at Oregon State 
University and through his head coaching years at Newport High School.
     Survivors include his wife, Karleene; daughter, Geni Morrow and son-in-
law Charlie Magee, Eugene; son, Luke Morrow, Reno, Nev.; grandchildren, Ali, 
J. T. and Casey Magee, Eugene, Alyssa Morrow, Portland, Bodhi Morrow, Reno; 
father-in-law, Carl Kramer, and brother and sister-in-law, C. Dennis and 
Demeetra Kramer, all of The Dalles.
     He was preceded in death by a son, Kory, in 1992.
     The date and place for the celebration of his life will be announced. 
Memorials may be made to the Gene Morrow Scholarship Fund, Lincoln County 
Foundation, 8423 Yaquina Bay Road, Newport, OR 97365. A college scholarship 
will be awarded annually at Newport High School.
