She was born July 5, 1916, in The Dalles, the oldest of four children to Elwood and Charlotte (Marvel) Adkisson. She was raised Southeast of Boyd on the family ranch and graduated from Dufur High School. After attending Willamette University, she returned to The Dalles to work for the federal government. She married Walter L. Morast on Oct. 9, 1937, in Boyd. He worked for Shell Oil Company, and they moved to Washington and later returned to The Dalles, taking over the Morast family cherry ranch. They gradually expanded the ranch and built a new home in the 1950s on Three Mile Creek. He and Lura designed and built the home with modern ingenuity, and they raised the family in that home until selling it in the early 1970s. After Mr. Morast retired, they moved into town, living on E. 21st Place. In later years, she resided at Flagstone Retirement and Assisted Living, and Carolyn's Adult Care. Lura was a life member of Eastern Star, the Methodist Church and enjoyed her family and friends. She was an avid reader, loving art, especially Claude Monet, playing the piano, knitting, crocheting, sewing, gardening, and helping run the farm. While their children were young, she taught 4-H and scout clubs. Lura worked as a clerk for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Services (ASCS) office in The Dalles for numerous years. She volunteered over 10,000 hours of time for The Dalles Mid Columbia Hospital after her retirement. In her later years, she and Walt traveled together, going hunting, fishing and learning/site seeing Oregon geology. Lura is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Kaye and Duane Fulmer, McMinnville, and Jo and Fritz Kuykendall, Fairbanks, Alaska; six grandchildren, Jim Chenoweth, Seattle ; Ellen Ball and Chris Chenoweth, both of McMinnville; Kerri Kuykendall, Seattle; Kate Kuykendall, New York City; Kim Koester, Fairbanks; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Merril and his wife, Thelma Adkisson, Portland; nieces and nephews including her niece, Pam Clausen, Dufur, and other numerous family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in September 1987, her sister, Beverly Crothers, and her brother, Dale Adkisson. Graveside memorial services will be held at The Dalles Odd Fellows Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road on Thursday, June 10, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Dalles Wasco County Library Foundation, 722 Court St., The Dalles, OR 97058, The Dalles Art Association, 220 East 4th St., The Dalles, OR 97058, or charity of choice.
