He was born in Shelbyville, Mo. on May 15, 1925 to Jesse and Alma (Smith) Miller. Jesse and Alma had three other sons, Don, Billy and Ben; all are deceased. The Miller family moved to Green River, Wyo. in 1936 when he was 11. He entered the US Army in Sept. 1943 and served for 30 years. He fought in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. He earned the Silver Star and Bronze Star for valor as well as the Legion of Merit and Meritorious Service medals. He retired from military service in 1973 at Fort Knox, Ky. He then worked for Sunoco in Liberia, West Africa. Dick and Louise Vaughn (Riddle) were married in May, 1945 and had 47 years together. He remarried to Georgia Elaine Miller; they were married for 11 years and lived in The Dalles. He was a volunteer at Oregon Veteran’s Home and the Mid- Columbia Medical Center; he was also a member of The Dalles Country Club and a lifetime member of the Association of the United States Army. Survivors include his wife Georgia of The Dalles; his five children, Laura (Lynda) Arnold and husband Bill, John Miller and his wife Louise, Richard Miller and wife TK, Michaela Miller, and Gary Miller and wife Linda; step-son Marty Miller and wife Becky, 16 grandchildren and many great- grandchildren. In accordance with his wishes there will be no public service; the family will observe private ceremonies of remembrance in conjunction with the placement of his ashes at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Veterans Home, 700 Veterans Drive, The Dalles, OR 97058 or OHSU Memorial Foundation. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
