Mr. Metzentine, 87, was a 57-year resident of Wamic, co-founder of the Dufur Threshing Bee, wagon-builder and wheelwright. He died at a local care facility. He was born Jan. 20, 1918 in Hillsboro, the youngest of three children to Herman and Cora Maude (Schmeltzer) Metzentine. He was raised on a farm near today’s Washington Square in Beaverton and graduated from Beaverton High School in 1937. Mr. Metzentine worked as a carpenter, farmer, woodworker and was a well known wheelwright. He was a member of Barlow Gate Grange in Wamic, Wamic Community Church, Wamic Shcool Board, Wasco County Soil Conservation District, Dufur Threshing Bee, Wasco County Pioneers Association, Wasco County Historical Society Fort Dalles Museum, Dufur Historical Society, Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and the Oregon Draft Horse Breeders Association. He enjoyed reading non-fiction books, studying history, working with draft horses in farming and in horse shows and woodworking. Mr. Metzentine also restored the Umatilla Wagon (Stagecoach) of The Dalles, co-founded the Dufur Threshing Bee. At Crate’s Point, he built a life-size replica of a pioneer raft with covered wagon, demonstrating what the pioneer settlers of Oregon used on the Columbia River. He organized the 150 year commemorative program honoring Oregon pioneer settlers. He was also a guest speaker at schools, organizations and community events. Mr. Metzentine is survived by his wife Eunice May (Gault) Metzentine of The Dalles, whom he married Dec. 31, 1939 in Tigard; his son: Mike and his wife, Judy Metzentine, The Dalles; his daughters: Judy Metzentine Saxton, Wamic; Debbie Metzentine Forrester and her husband, Charles, Portland; Peggy Metzentine Dyke and her husband, Dan, Halfway, MO; grandchildren: Tyla Metzentine, The Dalles; Lacy Metzentine, Dufur; Anne Marie Saxton, San Francisco, CA; Becky Saxton Baird and her husband, Todd, Beaverton; Kevin Saxton and his wife, Stella, Portland; Chris Saxton, Newberg; Danell Dyke Poisel and her husband, Chuck, The Dalles; David Dyke and his wife, Hyung Sook, Ozark, MO; great-grandchildren: Jacob and Caleb Poisel, The Dalles; Alexander Dyke, Ozark, MO; Nathaniel Baird, Beaverton; Derek Shugart, Portland. Memorial services will be at St. Peter’s Parish Hall, 1222 West 10th Street, The Dalles at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005 with Pastor Stan Wall officiating. Cremation was at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
