     Daniel Grossvener Mellish, 81, a resident of the Oregon Veterans’ Home in 
The Dalles, died at the local hospital on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004.
     He was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Letonia, Ohio, the sixth of twelve children 
to John Edward and Jessie (Wood) Mellish. He was raised in Ohio, Illinois and 
Oklahoma. 
     He moved to California in the late 1930s and entered the Merchant Marines 
in the early 1940s. He was discharged in 1946 and lived in Carlsbad, Vista, 
and Escondido, Calif., and then moved to Cave Junction in 1959. In 1969, he 
moved to College Place, Wash., then to Umapine in 1970, where he lived until 
moving to Union to be near his daughter.
     He was an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Umapine 
and was involved with Maranatha Mission projects in many foreign countries. He 
was also a member of the Tri-cities Mid-Columbia Merchant Marines Chapter.
     He is survived by his wife, Miriam M. Mellish, of Union, whom he married 
May 15, 1946, in Carlsbad, Calif., four sons, William Daniel Mellish, 
California; Daniel Richard Mellish, Walla Walla, Wash.; Michael Douglas “Jim” 
Mellish, Arizona; and Paul Edward Mellish, Walla Walla; his daughter, Esther 
Marie Miracle, Union; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and three 
sisters. He was preceded in death by his son, John Bruce Mellish in 1998.
     Memorial services are pending at the Umapine Seventh-day Adventist 
Church. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with 
Spencer, Libby and Pow ell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
