Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 28, 2006, 6:18 pm The Dalles Chronicle, June 25, 2006 Orval Francis (Mac) McManman, 84, died in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 22, 2006 at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles, which he entered two weeks before his death. He was born in Bend on March 17, 1922, to Frank and Ethel McManman. He was raised in Aumsville with older brother Frank LaVern. He served in the Navy during World War II. He spent most of his adult life in Central Oregon, living in Bend, Prineville, Madras and The Dalles. He worked as a farmer, a choker-setter in the woods, a brakeman for the Prineville Railroad and as a concrete inspector for Ebasco during the construction of Pelton Dam. He later worked in maintenance for Portland General Electric Co. at the Pelton and Round Butte hydroelectric projects. He worked as an executive housekeeper for Mountain View Hospital in Madras, as an executive housekeeper at Columbia Park Hospital in The Dalles, as a maintenance worker for the Army Corps of Engineers at The Dalles and John Day hydroelectric projects, and as a maintenance worker for Fort Dalles Museum. He was a member of The Dalles First Christian Church. He married Leona Haynes on June 15, 1947. She survives him in The Dalles. He liked being with his family and the various dogs that found their way into his life. Survivors include son Don McManman, Shoreline, Wash., and daughters Marie Torrillo, Portland, and Judy McManman, Vancouver and two grandchildren: Michael and Senie. A son, Dan, died in 1995. At his request, there will be no service. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Gorge, the First Christian Church or the American Lung Association.
