He was born June 20, 1941, in The Dalles, the third of four children to Jay Franklin and Phoebe B. (Lyons) McKay. Doug was raised in Kent on the family ranch and graduated from Sherman County Union High School in 1959. After high school, he began an electrical apprenticeship at Oregon State University and then went to work for Otis Elevators in San Francisco. In 1965, he transferred to Portland and moved to Wasco in 1968 and did farm work. The family moved to Stayton where he worked at the cannery and then returned to the family farm in Kent in fall 1973. He married Nancy Lee Hicks on November 21, 1965 in Wasco. They lived in Kent on the family ranch where he raised wheat and cattle. In fall 1991, they moved to Ione where his wife took the postmasters job and he commuted to work. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends, especially his grandchildren, and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed to hunt and fish. He is survived by his wife, Nancy McKay, Ione; three children, Shawn McKay, Seattle; Mark and his wife, Jamie McKay, Bend; and Steve and his wife Jamie McKay, Elgin; three grandchildren, Carson, Jaydon and Gage; his brother, Frank McKay, Salem; two sisters, Kay Thompson, Goldendale; and Peggy Mineer, Boise, Idaho. A celebration of life service will be held at the Grass Valley Grade School on Saturday, July 31, at 11 a.m. with Tom Norton officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
