She was born June 22, 1927, in The Dalles, the oldest of three children to Donald McPherson and Opal Violet (Hooper) Curtiss. She grew up in The Dalles off Mill Creek Road and attended schools in The Dalles. Her graduating class was the first to complete grades 9-12 at the The Dalles High School. After high school, she began work at the railroad tie plant doing bookkeeping and office work. Shortly thereafter, she married Leland Adolphus Mayhew on Nov. 12, 1946 in Portland. They lived in Maupin after they were married and have been residents since. She was an active contributor to the Art Auction in The Dalles and painted murals in the city of Maupin. She enjoyed artwork, painting, quilting and swathing hay and wheat. She also received her pilots license in the early 80’s. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Leland A. Mayhew, Maupin; her daughter, Kathy and her husband, Al Vaughn, Maupin; her daughter, Carol Mayhew, Sherwood; her son, Alan and his wife, Shannon Mayhew, The Dalles; her son, Curtiss Mayhew, Maupin; grandchildren, Torrie Williams, Marti, Jacob, Christine and Joshua Mayhew, Alexandra Vaughn-Martin; great-grandchildren, Bryana Soria; her sister, Loye Ann May, The Dalles; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her brother, Tommy Lee Curtiss in 2005. Memorial services will be held at the Maupin Legion Hall at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 24. Cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Southern Wasco Co.
