Wakley iwakley@msn.com May 7, 2006, 11:10 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, February 19, 1982 Word has been received here of the death of Virgil Dudley Mayfield, 85, a Southern Wasco County old timer of a pioneer family. He was born Feb. 24, 1896 at the Smock Prairie farm of his parents, Henry and Lura (Josie) Mayfield. His younger years were spent at Smock Prairie with a short time at Burns. He then moved to the Juniper Flat and Pine Grove area, where in 1918 he married Alta Richardson, daughter of Ben Richardson. A week after they had moved into a one-room log cabin rented from Sam Brown he was drafted into the army. After the war they farmed for two years on Juniper Flat and then moved to Smock Prairie, where they built a cottage on what was known as the "Lake Forty" now a part of the Gary and Sharon Thompson farm. He had been doing seasonal work for the U. S. Forest Service before his marriage, returning to it as well as working part time at Linn's Mill at Pine Grove, still living at their Smock Prairie place. In 1926 Virgil became a steady employee of the Forest Service, from which he retired in 1958. During 21 of those years he ran a road grader in all districts of the area. He was the road supervisor when the road to Timberline Lodge was opened for President Roosevelt's visit there. After leaving the Forest Service he worked three years for Knapp Logging Company. The Mayfields bought a home in Tygh Valley across the street from the Methodist Church and lived there for many years. Because of poor health they sold out to Odell Treanor and in 1978 moved to Salem to be near their children, but this area's wide open spaces were still "home" to Virgil. Survivors include his wife, Alta B. of Salem; daughters, Evelyn Bachmeier, Salem, and Verda Bell Nordgulen of Stayton; a son Norman V. Mayfield of Sequim, Wash.; a sister, Veva Stuvland of Lake Stevens, Wash.; four brothers, Cecil Mayfield of The Dalles, Mack Mayfield of Portland, Joseph Mayfield of Odell and Nathan Mayfield of Yakima; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were two children, Erma Alderman and Vernon Mayfield. Burial was at Salem late in December.
