The Dalles Chronicle, January 30, 2006
     Irma Elizabeth Matthew, 96, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local 
care facility on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006.
     She was born May 14, 1909, Bend, the older of two children to Joseph 
William and Lulu (Elder) Hoech. She grew up in Shaniko until moving to The 
Dalles at 13. She graduated from The Dalles High School in 1926 and later 
graduated from Oregon State College.
     She married Raymond Pomeroy Matthew on May 18, 1940, in The Dalles. She 
was a homemaker and worked with Ray at Matthew Distributing. 
     She was a member of United Church of Christ, Congregational, PEO 
Sisterhood, active with the Library Board and Republican Central Committee and 
an avid bridge player. She enjoyed homemaking, cooking and gardening.
     She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Raymond Matthew and son, 
William “Bill” Matthew and wife, Vicki, all of The Dalles; her granddaughters, 
Kimberlee Smith, Petaluma, Calif., and Holly Riggs, The Dalles; 5 great 
grandchildren, Justin and Kyle Smith, Matthew, Jessica and Emily Riggs, her 
cousin, Mildred Head, The Dalles, and nephew, Scott Milne and wife, Beverly, 
Bellevue, Wash. She was preceded in death by her sister, Irene; daughter, 
Mary, and daughter-in-law, Patricia.
     Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at the 
United Church of Christ Congregational, 5th & Court Streets, with Pastor Karl 
Vercouteren officiating. Private entombment will be held at The Dalles 18th 
Street IOOF Memorial Mausoleum. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home is in 
care of arrangements.
