Markman, 85, died at a local care facility on Tuesday, June 7, 2005. He was born April 3, 1920, in West Salem, Ill., the second of three children to Harry William and Florence (Weber) Markman. The family moved to the present family farm east of The Dalles in 1928. He attended grade school at Fairbanks School and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1938. He attended Oregon State College on a football scholarship and received a degree in civil engineering. Due to the attack on Pearl Harbor, his football team played and won the only transplanted Rose Bowl game at Duke University. He met Anna Stein while they were students at OSC and on Jan. 10, 1942, they eloped in Reno, Nev. Following graduation and receiving his commission in the Army, he served as a forestry officer in the 798 Engineer Forestry Company in Guadalcanal. After the war, they lived in Portland for a year, where he worked as a design engineer for the SP&S Railroad. In the fall of 1947, the couple moved back to the family farm, where they lived until Mr. Markman’s recent decline in health. He remained involved in farming and raising livestock, even after he retired in 1990. He served on numerous community boards including the Petersburg School Board, ESD School Board, Wasco Electric Co-op board of directors, Swine Superintendent at the Wasco County Fair, board of directors of the Oregon Wheat League Jr. Livestock Show, county committee member for the Farm Service Agency, Petersburg PTA and Wahtonka Boosters Club. He received great personal satisfaction helping 4-H exhibitors with their projects. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Oregon Wheat Growers League, Wasco County Cattlemen’s Association, Elks and Masonic Lodges, and the OSU Beaver Club. Throughout his career, he received various awards, including Conservation Farmer of the Year, Livestock Family of the Year and his Oregon State football team was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. In his free time, he enjoyed “talking farming,” watching sports, especially the OSU Beavers, and attending his grandchildren’s activities. He is survived by his wife, Anna Markman, The Dalles; his daughter, Celia and her husband, Ken Wienholz, Danville, Calif.; his daughter, Karen and her husband, Tom Mitchell, Applegate; his son, Jim and his wife, Jenny Markman, The Dalles; his son, Bill and his wife, Shelia Markman, The Dalles; his daughter, Sharon and her husband, Stacey Behrens, Twin Falls, Idaho; grandchildren Christina and Anna Marie Wienholz, Jonathan, Nicholas and Margot Markman, Stephanie and Jeffrey Markman, Rebecca and Katelyn Behrens; and nephew Michael Powers, Prospect, Ken. He was preceded in death by his brother, Samuel Markman and his sister, La Vange Powers. Viewing visitations will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell, Sunday, June 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held at The Dalles First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m., Monday, June 20, with interment at Odd Fellows Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road.
