Surnames: Makino, Shigenobu, Brunson, Davis, Allard, Bullock. May Kazuko Makino, 90, a longtime resident of Dallesport (Washington), died at a local hospital in The Dalles on Tuesday, April 8, 2003. She was born December 29, 1912, in Milwaukee, the second of five children to Orichiro and Iseno Shigenobu. She was raised and educated in Japan, and returned to the United States at the age of 16. On June 29, 1931, she married Cosmer K. Makino in Hood River (Oregon). They were married 70 years in June 2001. In 1931, the Makinos purchased land in North Dalles, now known as Dallesport, and developed the sage-brushed land for truck gardening. Soon other Japanese families came to the area and established the truck gardening farms of Dallesport. She worked along with her husband for over 65 years, except for the interruption in 1941, when their families were interned in Tule Lake, California during World War II. She was a member of the Japanese American Citizens League and Nichiren Shu Minori Kai Congregation in Portland. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, crocheting, fishing, square dancing, mushroom hunting, as well as traveling to see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sporting events and 4-H activities. She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses Kathi and Tom Brunson, Ellensburg (Washington); Judy and Bud Davis, The Dalles; Maryanne and Glenn Allard, Moses Lake (Washington); eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cosmer K. Makino, in 2001 and her son, Norman H. Makino, in 1976, a grandson, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter and a niece Suma T. Bullock. Viewing and visitation will be held at Smith Callaway Chapel, Friday, April 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, from 10 a.m. through the services at 2 p.m. Services will be conducted by Bishop Zuigaku Kodachi with burial at The Dalles Odd Fellows Cemetery and the Seven Day Service immediately following burial at Smith Callaway Chapel.
