He was born in Ashland, Wis., on May 16, 1903 to Ashland pioneers Alexander “Sandy” and Ida (Kerton) Main, the first of four children. He was raised in Ashland and graduated from Northland College in 1926. He then moved to Montana where he was a teacher, coach, and served as principal at Cohagen, Judith Gap, Plezna, Broadus, and Victor from 1927 to 1938. He married Erma Edna Pierson on April 1, 1928. They were divorced in 1945. He was employed as a social case worker in Broadus between 1938-41 and moved with his family to Portland, in 1942 where he worked in the shipyards until 1945. After World War II he worked for the Portland Traction Company driving streetcars and later loading buses. On Aug. 11, 1946 he married Marie Daniels Ryherd and they moved with their blended family of six children to what is now the David Douglas district in Portland. He worked as a laboratory technician for Crown Zellerbach in West Linn from 1952 until his retirement in 1965. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, gardening, playing cards and dancing, and his pets. An active member of the Gresham Senior Center, he also served on their board of directors. He was an active member and deacon of the Savage Memorial Presbyterian Church in Gresham and attended regularly until moving to The Dalles in 1997. He is survived by his children; Dorothy Lee, Sun City, Calif.; Jack Main and his wife Bobbie, Cottage Grove; Martha Ryherd Carpenter, California; Mike Ryherd and his wife Dottie, Bainbridge Island, Wash.; and Edna Kae Goss and her husband John, The Dalles. Also surviving is a sister, Alice Wickham, Naples, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie on Aug. 31, 1975, his daughter Erma Rae on Jan. 4, 1992, brother Harold Main and sister Helen Frances Mach. In accordance with his wishes there will be no public services. The family will gather to observe private ceremonies of remembrance in the Fireside Room of the Civic Auditorium. Private interment will be at IOOF Cemetery on Cherry Heights in The Dalles. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
