The Dalles Chronicle, March 2, 2005
     Ralph John Madsen, 87, a longtime resident of The Dalles, died at his 
home on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005.
     He was born Feb. 3, 1918, in Spring Grove, Minn., the second of three 
children to Ralph W. and Dellia (Thompson) Madsen. 
     He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and married Helen Jane Helvey 
on Dec. 31, 1976.
     He worked for Fred Meyer, Hudson House, as a broker. He came to The 
Dalles in 1955 establishing West Gate Market and also other grocery stores in 
The Dalles area, retiring in 1975. He worked for AIA Insurance Company in The 
Dalles from 1976 to 1996. 
     He was a founding member of The Dalles Rodeo Association, The Dalles 
Country Club, Sail Plane and Soaring Society of America. He enjoyed tennis, 
skiing, yard work and biking.
     Ralph is survived by his wife, Helen Madsen, The Dalles; four sons, Craig 
Madsen and his wife, Sue, The Dalles, Eric Madsen and his wife, Sandy, Kerry 
Madsen and his wife, Marcia, all of Portland, Ronald Madsen, Vancouver, Wash.; 
step-children, Rob Kiser and his wife, Cathy, Goldendale, Julie Kiser, Kelso, 
Wash., and Doug Kiser and his wife, Sara, Eagle Creek; 17 grandchildren; 12 
great-grandchildren and his twin brother, B.I. Madsen, Loveland, Colo. He was 
preceded in death by his brother, Ray Madsen and his first wife, Marjory 
Elizabeth Schroder. 
     Graveside services held at Three Mile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery, 
(formerly known as Parklawn Cemetery) at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2, with 
Bob Middleton officiating. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in care 
of arrangements.
