He began his schooling at Emigrant Springs, attended St. Mary’s Academy for a couple of years, then finished his schooling in Rufus, graduating in 1936. After school, he worked for several of the farmers in the area, but mostly for his Uncle Ronald Macnab. He played the saxophone in a local dance band which included Elda Macnab and Lyndon Guilford. Two months after Pearl Harbor, he went into the Army on February 11, 1942. He spent two months in the States and the next three and a half years in the South Pacific, serving with the 32nd Division in New Guinea, Australia and The Philippines. He returned to the States in October 1945 and was discharged the next day. After the war, he went to work for Dielschneider Equipment. On June 22, 1948, he married Helen Kelly in St. Peter’s Catholic Church. This union brought into the world 8 children. In November, 1949, Tom and Helen and their 6-week-old baby, Jane, moved to Sherman County, first working for Gordon Reid, then Hildred Zell, then Fritz Watkins. In May 1955, they were able to rent one of the Baker Estate ranches and farmed there for 26 years at which time he retired and they moved into Wasco. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wasco, Wasco Cooperative Grain Growers, the Oregon Wheat League, the American Legion, and a lifetime member of BPOE #303 of The Dalles. Survivors include his wife Helen, and children: Jane and Jim Dow, Camas; Mary Macnab, Woodburn; Alexander (Sandy) and Mary Anne Macnab, Wasco; Tom, Jr. and Georgia Macnab, Moro; Kate and Gerry McLain, Wallowa; Mark Macnab, Wasco; Joe and Barbara Macnab, Portland; and Margaret Macnab, The Dalles. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Pete Macnab and Pat Macnab of Wasco and Rose Hulse of Dufur, plus a ton of nieces and nephews. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 30 with recitation of the rosary following at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, July 1, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peters Catholic Church in The Dalles with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Internment will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Gorge, The Dalles, the Sherman County Museum in Moro, or St Mary’s Academy, The Dalles.
