He was born Sept. 20, 1928, in Miltona, Minn., the oldest of eight boys to Paul and Mabel (Irwin) Lucas. The family moved from Minnesota to Hood River in 1940, where he completed his education. After high school, he worked as a logger in Montana. In 1960, while there, he met Margaret Brown, and they later married in Coeur D’ Alene, Idaho. They later made their home in Hood River, where he continued to work as a logger for Gehrig’s Logging, and then for the county of Hood River until March of 1969, when he was injured in an industrial accident, which led to an early retirement. Afterward, he was able to stay home and help raise his two children, Shannon Marie and Jody Steele Lucas, and in 1986 a grandson, Justin Steele Lucas. He was a member of Local Eagles Club 2150, where he is a past state president and has been a member for the past 40 years. He loved to fish and hunt and he enjoyed gardening, especially his roses and gladiolas. He also enjoyed camping with his children and their many friends, whom he also considered his children. He was well known for his Saturday nights spent watching Portland Wrestling and eating jojo’s with nacho cheese. He is survived by his daughter, Shannon, Silverdale, Wash.; his son, Jody, Longmont, Colo.; his grandson, Justin, Hood River; many nieces and nephews; and several adopted “daughters.” He is also survived by three sons from a previous marriage. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; brothers, Don, Dean, Wayne, and Carroll; and his parents. Memorial services will be held at the Eagles Club in Hood River at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 11. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
