She was born March 4, 1914, in Mt. Vernon, Mo., the third of seven daughters to Fred Nathan and Lillian (Wolf) VanMatre. She was raised in Bend, and graduated from high school in Bend. Dody married Durward Helyer and they lived in Salem and Eastern Oregon. They owned and operated a ranch in Kent, moved in 1956 and returned to The Dalles in 1958. He preceded her in death in 1968. She married Walter J. Long in Bingen, Wash. in 1970 and he preceded her in death in 1977. Eudora worked as a volunteer for Mid-Columbia Medical Center, the Salvation Army and Lions. She was a member of the First Christian Church in The Dalles, and Rebekah Lodge. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed volunteering, baking, playing cards, gardening, especially her roses. Dody is survived by five children, Gordon and his wife, Pat Helyer, Bedford, Texas; Beverly and her husband, Lawrence Brinkly, Cornelius,; Judy and her husband, Rusty Conner, Portland,; Michael and his wife, Sharon Helyer, Husum, Wash.; Leroy and his wife, Sandy Helyer, Battle Ground, Wash.; three sisters, Clara Anderson, Bend,; Margaret Burgess, Tigard,; Norma Murphy, Gresham,; two step-children, Polly Ignowski, Seaside,; John and his wife, Carmen Long, The Dalles; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both husbands, Durward Helyer, Walter J. Long; her son, Wilbur Helyer her grandson, Troy Glover; her great-granddaughter Anna Waschka and sisters, Mabel, Lucille and Bonnie. Viewing visitation will be held at Smith Callaway Chapel from 9 a.m. to the beginning of the services on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004. Funeral services will be held at Smith Callaway Chapel, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004 with Asa Jenson officiating. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road. Smith Callaway Chapel is in care of arrangements.
