Robert David Long, 81, a native of The Dalles, died on November 17, 2002. He was born April 8, 1921, in The Dalles, descendant of an Oregon pioneer family. His great-grandmother was a co-founder of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in The Dalles.** He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1939 and attended Northwestern State Teachers College in Ada, Oklahoma, Vanport College (Washington?) and Portland State College. He worked for the Wasco County Road Department, U.S. Corps of Engineers and Oregon State Highway Department before enlisting as a cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served for three years attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant Navigator. He flew 33 combat missions as a crew member of a B-17 bomber out of Foggia, Italy. He was awarded a medal for Air Combat, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the service he resumed his career as a highway engineer with the Oregon State Highway Department where he worked for 40 years before retiring in 1981. He married Charlotte Berry in 1968, she preceded him in death in 1993. He was a member of the St. David Episcopal Church and served in several capacities. He was a member of the Old Wasco County Pioneer Association and the Gateway Elks Lodge. He enjoyed photography, gardening and traveling. Survivors include six children, 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday morning at Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes. Interment with military honors was at Willamette National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
