Surnames: Loftin, Hill, Fisher Robert "Bob" Eugene Loftin Sr., 83, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local hospital of a sudden illness on Monday, May 12, 2003. He was born November 3, 1919, in Portland, the second of four sons to John Franklyn and Ada Jean (Hill) Loftin. Soon after that, he and his family moved to Long Beach, California where his father worked in the oil fields. The family came back to Goldendale (Washington) where he attended grade school. When his mother passed away, the family moved to Stevenson (Washington) where he finished high school. He loved all sports and was an excellent athlete and lettered in four sports for four years. After high school, he went to work in the Bremerton (Washington) ship yards as an electrician apprentice. In June 1941, he married Ruth Lee Fisher in Stevenson and they lived in Bremerton. They had a baby girl, Lugene, on June 20, 1943. When WWII broke out he joined the Navy and served in the Attu Islands, a group of islands of the Aleutian Island chain, as an aviation electrician. After the war, he returned to The Dalles in December of 1945. They had a son, Bob Jr., on September 12, 1946. They raised the children in The Dalles and he worked as an electrician on the Bonneville Dam, The Dalles Dam, The John Day Dam and Celilo Converter Station. He retired in 1982 after 37 years as a union electrician in local #48. He loved all sports as well as hunting and fishing. He tied his own flies and loved to fly fish. He joined the Dalles Country Club in 1973 and loved to play golf, shooting three holes in one, two at The Dalles Country Club and one in Goldendale at a tournament. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, BPOE 303, The United Methodist Church, where he served on the board of trustees. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Loftin, The Dalles; his daughter, Lugene Loftin and his son, Bob Loftin Jr. and his wife Linda, The Dalles; two brothers and their spouses, Bill and Nancy Loftin, Copalis Beach, Washington; Jim and Pat Loftin, Campbell River, British Columbia (Canada); five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Jack. Memorial services will be held at The Dalles First United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 17 at 12:07 P.M. (his golf tee time). Past Jody Felton and Steve Lawrence will officiate. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
