She was born Nov. 17, 1929, at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C., the oldest of two children to Colonel Joseph Shirley and Mary Kathleen (Savage) Gorlinski. She grew up as a military brat in Washington, D.C., China and Bonneville. As a child, her life followed her father’s military career, including early years at Bonneville Dam, where her father was the first chief engineer for the U.S. Army. After World War II, when she was 16, her family was on the first boatload of dependents that arrived in China. She graduated from Sacramento Junior College in Sacramento, Calif., and attended the University of Oregon the following fall. She married Lt. Jack Caskey in 1950, and he later preceded her in death. She married John T. Lewis on May 8, 1953, in The Dalles. She was a member of the Episcopal Church, Chi Omega Sorority at the University of Oregon, PEO Chapter EJ, The Dalles Art Association, Columbia Gorge Art Gallery, Stitcher’s Guild, “LEGGS” Book Club, served on school PTA and volunteered as a scout leader. She is survived by her children John B. Lewis, Vancouver, Wash.; James G. Lewis, Los Angeles; Karen J. Lewis and her daughter-in-law, Harriett B. Lewis, both of The Dalles; grandchildren, Rebecca F. Lewis and Joshua C. Lewis, both of The Dalles; Kelly Woodson, Phoenix, Ariz.; Brian Lewis, Los Angeles; Celia Todd, Astoria; and Johnathan “JT” White, Kirkland, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Shaina B. Lewis, The Dalles; and Emily and Allena Woodson, Phoenix, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews, and a multitude of good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, spouses, Lt. Jack Caskey in 1950 and John T. Lewis in 1993, her daughter, Kathryn in 2001, brother-in-law, Donald G. Lewis in 1996, sister-in-law, Jeanne Lewis in 2005 and mother-in- law, Grace G. Lewis. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, with Rev. Tracy Browning officiating. Immediately following, there will be a luncheon in the fellowship hall which will include a display of the various artistic creations that depict Joan’s travels and life experiences. Cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
