He was born April 6, 1927, in The Dalles and grew up on a wheat ranch in Grass Valley. After serving in the Navy in World War II, he earned a master’s degree in social administration and corrections from Ohio State University in 1954. He then embarked on a three-decade career dedicated to helping others. He worked as director of social services for the Boys Industrial School in LaCrosse, Wis. In 1957, he returned to Oregon, where he was executive secretary of the Governor’s Committee on Children and Youth. He then became state director of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency in Oregon and, later, in California. In 1971, he became director of youth services for Oregon’s Childrens’ Services Division, overseeing MacLaren and Hillcrest Schools and other youth programs. He continued to serve in several capacities for local and state government, including deputy director of the Department of Human Services for Multnomah County, during which he helped establish Shared Housing, a program that allows people to remain in their own homes by organizing shared living arrangements. After retiring in 1985, he and his wife, Darleane, became Peace Corps volunteers in the Philippines, working with local health care providers on immunization and sanitation projects. They also facilitated cleft-palate operations for more than 15 children. Returning to Portland in 1987, he helped found Store-to-Door, a service in which volunteers deliver groceries and other necessities to the elderly and disabled. In “retirement” he volunteered countless hours to the League of Women Voters, Store-To-Door and Eastrose Unitarian Fellowship. He and his wife also traveled to every continent and enjoyed cross-country trailer trips, visiting family and friends. He also enjoyed playing tennis at the Portland Tennis Center’s senior program. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Darleane, his daughter, Nancy, and his son, Brad. A celebration of life will be held at Eastrose Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1133 NE 181st Ave., Portland, on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Eastrose Unitarian Fellowship, PO Box 298, Gresham, OR 97030-0046, or to Store-To-Door, 2145 NW Overton St., Portland, OR 97210.
