The Dalles Chronicle, July 12, 2005
     Velda Elnora Larkins, 90, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local 
hospital on Monday, July 4, 2005.
     She was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Jewell, Kan., one of three girls born to 
Edson and Zora (Loucks) Van Dusen. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Mida 
and Ezra Topliff and graduated high school in Jewell. 
     After high school, she worked for a hot springs therapy center in Kansas, 
where she met her future husband, Russell William Larkins. He moved to Oregon 
and then sent for her to follow. She married Russell on June 4, 1939, in 
Vancouver, Wash. They lived in Seaside and moved to The Dalles in 1948.
     She was a member of the Evangelical Church, Rebekah’s Lodge in Seaside 
and The Dalles, Wasco County Pioneer Association and was very active with The 
Dalles Senior Center, and driving for the Meals on Wheels Program for over 20 
years. 
     She also worked as a cook at Petersburg School for three years, the 
election board for several years, Mid-Columbia Medical Center gift shop and 
the Dufur Threshing Bee for seven years.
     She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, gardening and especially her roses. 
     She is survived by her daughter, Twila and her husband, Charlie Metroz, 
Pendleton; grandchildren, Tina and her husband, Hector Corral, Portland; 
Tarita and her husband, Kurt Johnson, Tygh Valley; David Komorowski and his 
wife, Susan, Clinton, N.J.; great-grandchildren, Farrah, Angela, Felicia, 
Jadi, Travis, Codey, Casey, and Evan; great-great-grandchildren, Breanna, 
Michael, and Adrianna; her cousin, Elwyn and his wife, Geri Topliff. 
     She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, in Feb. 1991; her 
daughters, Marlene Komorowski in 1974 and Mary Katherine Larkins in 1946; her 
sisters, Zelpha and Ardys.
     Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home 
on Friday, July 15 from 2 to 5 p.m.
     Funeral services will be held at The Dalles Evangelical Church at 2 p.m. 
on Saturday, July 16, with interment following at Odd Fellows Cemetery on 
Cherry Heights Road. 
     Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
