She was born in The Dalles on Jan. 21, 1917, the second of six children to Paul and Margaret Darnielle. She lived in The Dalles most of her childhood, graduating from The Dalles High School in 1934 and was known as “Kelly” for her love of kelly green. She married a long-time family friend, Daniel Eugene Lantis, in The Dalles on March 11, 1939. They lived there when their son Daniel Eugene “Gene” was born in 1940 and Thomas Roy “Tom” in 1942. They moved to Hood River in 1943 and on a small farm on what was then Portland Way, where Caroline Ann “Carrie” was born in 1946. Her husband worked at the Dee Mill for a whole but worked for Apple Growers and Diamond Fruit for more than 30 years before retiring in 1969. They bought a home at Fourth and May streets. She worked at the Hood River Cafe for several years after her husband retired and they lived in the Oak Apartments. She loved to crochet and made hundreds of pineapple tablecloths and played piano when company came. She served as secretary for the Hood River Valley Christian Church. In 1978 they built a home and lived on Gene’s farm in Dallas, where Tom and Carrie and their families lived nearby. Her husband died in 1992 after having a heart attack and strokes. She moved to the San Diego area the next year and lived with her daughter until her death from emphysema, asthma and heart failure. Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Grace Wescott, in the San Diego area; her children, Daniel Eugene “Gene” and Nona Lynn (Sandercock) Lantis; Thomas Roy “Tom” and Ruth Ann (Moss) Lantis; Caroline Ann “Carrie” Ciolina; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including one on the way.
