Surnames: LaFountain, Gadway, DiFabio, Liebertz, Schwindt, Puryea, Gillman Earl John LaFountain, 82, a resident of The Dalles, died at his home on Tuesday, April 29, 2003. He was born April 12, 1921 in Mooers Forks, New York, the fourth of nine children born to Oliver and Emma (Gadway) LaFountain. He grew up and attended schools in Mooers Fork. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II then moved to Vurlington, Vermont and worked as a firefighter. He moved to Portland in 1954 and married Dora Carolina DiFabio on October 30, 1954. While in Portland he started as a firefighter with the government at an air base and later became fire chief. The air base was closed in 1969 and they moved to The Dalles where he worked for the Corps of Engineers before he retired in 1980. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Dora LaFountain, The Dalles; daughters, Mary and her husband, William Liebertz, Glendale, Arizona; Doreen and Gerald Schwindt, Gresham (Oregon); four grandchildren, Kayla, Robin, Amy and Matthew; his brother, Owen LaFountain; sisters, Irene Puryea, Lillian Peryea and Eva Gillman, all of Altoona, New York. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Viewing and visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 5, with Reverend Todd Unger as celebrant. Interment services will be held at 1 p.m. at Gethsemane Catholic Cemetery in Portland. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2120 First Avenue N., Seattle, Washington 98109.
