Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 30, 2006, 3:57 pm The Dalles Chronicle, August 23, 2006 James Lowe (Jim) Kribs, 87, a long time Oregon high school educator and coach, whose career included jobs at The Dalles and Wahtonka High Schools, died on Aug. 21, 2006 of natural causes. He was born in Burns on Jan. 29, 1919 to Margaret Nellita (Nellie) Kribs Branson and the late James Lowe Kribs. His father died a few months prior to Jim’s birth during the great flu epidemic. Left with four young children and minimal resources his mother struggled to raise her children. She often moved the family several times a year, working as a chuck wagon cook on the remote ranches throughout Harney County and staying with relatives during the off season. When he was 12 he started a janitorial service, cleaning saloons and stores in Burns, often working from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. before school to support his family. He worked for two shop owners in Burns during his senior year in high school and they offered to help him with college tuition. The pastor of the Nazarene church there suggested that he attend Northwest Nazarene College. It was there that he found two special things; a personal relationship with God and his wife and love of 65 years, Wilma. After graduation and marriage in 1941 he was offered five sales and marketing jobs and an opportunity to teach. He chose to teach. He served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific as a radar man on a troop transport ship. He earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Linfield and taught social studies and “Modern Problems” in Burns for 20 years. He coached football and baseball and refereed football, basketball and wrestling for many years. In 1965 he took a position as counselor at The Dalles High School and completed his career at Wahtonka High School in The Dalles in 1979. He and Wilma enjoyed 25 years of retirement, wintering in Arizona and summering in Oregon. They enjoyed traveling, dancing and playing bridge and were active members of the Christian church throughout their lives. They returned to Tualatin in 2002 where they have been active in the lives of their families and their community of friends at Tualatin Senior Center. He is survived by his wife, Wilma; a sister, Mildred White; sons, Leonard and Gordon; daughters, Lorraine Boswell and Rebecca Swick; nine grandchildren, Jeff, Chris, Justin and Sarah Kribs; Joe, Mariana, Ben and Adam Swick, and Alicia Brown, and six great grandchildren, Cason, Aldan, Jaxon and Kaylah Kribs, and David and Carson Brown. A graveside service will be held at Mountainside Cemetery in Scholls, on Southwest Hillsboro Highway, 1.25 mile south of Scholls at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 25. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, c/o Tualatin Senior Center, 8513 SW Tualatin Road, Tualatin OR 97062; or S.O.D.A. (Save Our District’s Athletics) c/o Paula Tomey, Burns Union High School, 1100 Oregon Ave., Burns, OR 97720. Arrangements are by Young’s Funeral Home in Tigard.
