Ray Kortge, longtime Wasco County wheat farmer, died Aug. 11 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland following an extended illness. Born in Mt. Carmel, Ill., in 1913, Kortge moved to The Dalles in 1923 and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1931. He married Pauline Piercey on Oct. 14, 1939. Until 1969, Kortge raised wheat on the family's Jap Hollow farm. After his retirement from farming, he worked for the Wasco County ASC until 1976. Kortge was active in agricultural organizations, including Wasco County Farm Bureau and Oregon Wheat League, of which he was a past president. He was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge AF&AM No. 15. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Kortge, his three children, Penny Havig of Roseburg, Dean Kortge of Eugene, and Vicki Kortge of Monmouth, and by three grandchildren. Other survivors include his brother, Paul Kortge of The Dalles, and sisters Daisy Dezney of Portland, Rachel Christy of Portland, and Frances Patterson of Bellevue, Wash. He had numerous nieces and nephews. Services were Wednesday at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home with Pastor Ed Long of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial at Park Lawn Cemetery. The family asks that friends acknowledge his request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund. He served on the building committee.
