The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. ********************************************************************************* Transcribed and formatted for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Earline Wasser April 2003 ********************************************************************************* The Dalles Chronicle March 28, 2003 Surnames: Kohl, Thompson, von Chmara, Swartz, Garoutte, Jackson, Henderson Victorene Eva Kohl, 80, a longtime resident of the Wamic (Oregon) area, and recently of Potlatch, Idaho, died March 21, 2003 at a care center of age-related causes. Victorene and her twin sister, Ovene, were born December 12, 1922 in Jay, Oklahoma. In 1934 her family moved to Oregon and settled in the Willamette Valley. She grew up in the Grand Ronde (Oregon) area after completing her schooling at Willamina (Oregon). It was there she met and married the mail carrier, John Kohl, on November 21, 1940. They later moved to Portland where she worked in the shipyards as an electrician and as a meat packer for Chipsteak until they bought a ranch and moved to Wamic in April, 1952. She was known for her industrial nature and was not only a housewife, mother and farmer but also worked as janitor for the Smock School and later drove school bus from Smock (Oregon) to Wamic for 27 years. She was a charter member of the Tywana Saddle Club and the Wamic Historical Society. She served as bread lady for the Wamic Meal Site and provided pies. She enjoyed playing pinochle and making quilts to give away and took up painting in later life. After selling the ranch she owned for 50 years, she moved to Potlatch with her daughter and family in July, 2002. There she enjoyed her great-grandchildren, grandson and family and continued to play cards and make quilts. Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Kohl Thompson and her husband, Gary, Potlatch; grandsons, Trevor Thompson and wife, Kerry, Potlatch; Tom Thompson and wife, Sarah, Ashton, Idaho; Paula von Chmara, Germany; two great grandsons, Wade and Kaycee Thompson, Potlatch; a sister, Mary Adonis Swartz, Sumner, Washington; two brothers, Duane Garoutte, St. Helens (Oregon) and Bill Garoutte, Gaston (Oregon). She was preceded in death by her husband; her twin sister, Ovene Belle Jackson; her mother, Beulah Henderson Garoutte and stepfather, Ellis Garoutte. A celebration of her life will be held on April 12, 2002 at the Wamic Grange Hall in Wamic. Memorials are suggested to the Wamic Historical Society and White river Health and Living. Arrangements are under the direction of Short's Funeral Chapel.
