He was born Oct. 11, 1916, in Miles City, Montana, the oldest of five children to James and Mable (Lawrence) Kochel and grew up in Baker, Montana. He moved to Washington in 1936 and secured employment with Ryderwood’s Railroad Logging operation and began a lifetime career in railroading. He worked as a locomotive engineer for the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway, which later became the Burlington Northern, from 1943 until his retirement in 1982. He met Helen Clow in 1949 and they married in 1950, celebrating 52 years of love and marriage on Sept. 2, 2002. They have made their home in Wishram since 1960. In 1963 he developed and enjoyed a ranch in central British Columbia. He was a long-time member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in The Dalles and was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, 40 of those years with Goldendale Lodge No. 31, which recently presented him with a 40-year pin. He is survived by his wife, Helen, Wishram; daughters Lois Pavek, Billings, Mont.; Janet Arnold and her husband Fred, Poulsbo, Wash.; sons Larry J. Kochel and his wife Arlene, Shelby, Mont.; John L. Kochel and his wife Karen, Vanderhoof, B.C., Canada; his sister Marjorie Smith and husband Glen, Baker, Mont.; 22 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Reid, Kenneth, and Robert. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in The Dalles, with the Reverend Tracy Browning presiding. Private interment of his ashes will be on the Circle K Ranch in Vanderhoof, B.C. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1805 Minnesota Street, The Dalles, OR 97058 or to Hospice of The Gorge, 751 Myrtle Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
