She was born March 2, 1921 in La Grande, Oregon, the oldest of five children to Benjamin Franklin and Marion Josephine (Barnes) Hill. She grew up in Telocaset, OR in the upstairs of the railroad depot that her parents operated for the Union Pacific Railroad. She graduated from Union High School in 1938. She then attended Eastern Oregon Normal School, Sacred Heart School of Nursing at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA and Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Portland, OR. She moved to The Dalles during WWII and worked at the Columbia Park State Home until it closed. She married H. Carl Klindt on November 29, 1959 in The Dalles. She loved doing work for her church and worked at the Portland Temple for 12 years. She taught swimming lessons for many years during the 1960’s and was very proud of having taught so many children how to swim. She loved needlework and was an expert in crocheting. She crocheted afghans for family, friends, and various charitable organizations for raffles and fund raising. She was known for always having a crochet project with her almost everywhere she went. Gardening was another passion. Flowers of all kinds decorated her yard and life. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, H. Carl Klindt, The Dalles; daughters, Sallie Torres, Eugene, Susan and her husband Allen Saling, The Dalles; sons, William E. (Ed) and his wife, Mary Woods, Timber Valley, WA, James and his wife, Janet (Stauffer) Woods, Dufur, Donald and his wife, Gail Woods, Salem and Ronald Woods, CA; 17 grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; sisters, Josephine Clausen, Portland, Patricia Greene, The Dalles; her brother, Benjamin Hill, The Dalles; numerous nieces, nephews and foster children. She was preceded in death by an infant sister and two infant grandsons. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral home on Tuesday, June 28 from 2 to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday, 9 a.m. to noon. Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 29. Interment will be held at Three Mile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
