(Betty) Kirby, 73, a resident of Athena and a former longtime resident of Fossil, died Saturday, June 12, 2004 at a hospital in Walla Walla, Wash. She was born July 6, 1930 in Hood River to Howard and Hazel Sandman Hollenbeck. She grew up and attended school in Hood River where she graduated from high school. After graduation she attended Northwest Business College in Portland. She married Vern W. Kirby at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hood River on Nov. 19, 1949. The couple moved to Fossil where they spent the next 40 years raising their six children and becoming actively involved in the community. She served as an officer and District Captain for TOPS, treasurer for the Fossil Volunteer Ambulance, Easter Seals and St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and was honored with her husband as Citizen of the Year in Wheeler County. She worked as business manager for Wright Chevrolet from 1966 to 1989. After retiring the couple moved to The Dalles and spent winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. Following her husband’s death in May 2002, she moved to Athena where she lived with her son, Don, his wife, Michelle, and granddaughter, Danielle. Her surviving children are Don, Athena; Ron and Larry Kirby, Portland; Nan Cupp, Chiloquin; Jean Diehl, Riverbank, Calif.; and Fred Kirby, Antioch, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Zack Kirby, Teresa and Jessica Diehl, Jennifer Kirby, Jeremy Kirby, Sarah Kirby and Danielle Kirby. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by the parents, and a brother, Richard Hollenbeck. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Athena. A graveside service will be held on the same day at St. Mark’s Cemetery in Hood River at 3:30 p.m. followed by refreshments in the parish hall. Memorials may be made to the Fossil Volunteer Ambulance, P.O. Box 97, Fossil, OR 97830 or local Hospice programs. Sweeney Mortuary of Condon is in care of arrangements.
