Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 8, 2006, 10:13 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, March 8, 1984 Funeral services for Sam Kerbs, 75, a former resident of The Dalles and of Sherman County will be held Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Cornelius. Mr. Kerbs died earlier this week. He was born Jan. 5, 1909 in Kansas and attended Concordia College in Seward, Neb. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in music. He began his music career by teaching in a rural North Dakota school before moving to Oregon. He married his wife, Marjorie, on June 3, 1934. Mr. Kerbs conducted The Dalles High School Band from 1945 to 1950 and while he was director the band was awarded first place in the state band contest in 1950. At that time, Mr. Kerbs returned to the University of Oregon to obtain his master's degree. He taught at North Bend High from 1952 to 1962 and he and his wife then went to Cleveland, Ohio, where he conducted the Cleveland Lutheran High band from 1962 to 1968. They moved back to Oregon and he taught school in Sherman County from 1968 to 1978, when he retired, and moved to Banks. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Vickie Balk, and two grandchildren, Andy and Holly. Memorials may be made to the Good Shepherd Home of the West in Cornelius.
