Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 21, 2006, 1:28 pm The Dalles Chronicle, March 31, 2006 James E. Kelly Sr., 87, a former The Dalles resident, died March 21, 2006 at his Portland residence. He was born Jan. 17, 1919, to Raymond and Augusta Kelly in The Dalles. He grew up in The Dalles, attended Columbia Prep High School in Portland and graduated from Stanford University in 1940. After college, he was a wheat and cattle rancher in The Dalles. In World War II he joined the Army Air Corps and served until the end of the war. After serving in the Air Corps, he returned to his ranch and in January 1946 married Mercedes Foley. They continued ranching and raising children until 1956, when he became president and chairman of Sawyers Inc., in Portland. In 1967, he retired from Sawyers and founded Kelco Inc., which manufactured and distributed saw mill chain. He was a partner in several other Portland companies and in 2001 founded Northern Chain Specialties, which manufactures chain for paper mills. He served on the boards of Columbia Funds Management Co., Emanuel Hospital Foundation, Edgefield Childrens Home, and Jesuit High School Presidents Advisory Board. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mercedes F. Kelly; six children, James Jr. and his wife Rose, Diane Hamm and her husband Fred, Kevin and his wife Karen, Mark and his wife Lynnette, Stephen and his wife Kathy, Shannon DiLorenzo and her husband David; 17 grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers: Wilbur Kelly and Vernon Kelly, both of The Dalles; Kenneth Kelly, Honolulu; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Thomas More Church, Mt Angel Abby or Jesuit High School. A Mass of Christian Burial was said on Friday morning. Riverview Abbey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
