The Dalles Weekly Reminder, April 12, 1984
     Virgil G. Kelly, a rancher and former member of The Dalles City Council 
from 1938-1961, died Thursday, April 12, at home in Seattle.  He was 89.

     Mr. Kelly was born in The Dalles Feb. 9, 1895 to James L. and Henrietta 
Kelly, attended St. Mary's Academy and Columbia University in Portland.  He 
was married to Eva Gilpin in The Dalles, May 2, 1917.  She died in February 
1960.

     Mr. Kelly was man of the year in 1957 in The Dalles, was a member of the 
League of Oregon Cities, the county budget committee 1951-54, the Wasco County 
Wheat Growers, The Dalles Cherry Cooperative, served as a chamber of commerce 
director 1951-54, was a member of the Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, 
Kiwanis and Elks.

     He grew cherries, wheat and livestock here until 1961 when he married and 
moved to Seattle.

     Survivors include his wife, Vianna; sons Jerry and Leonard, The Dalles; 
six grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

     Recitation of the rosary was held Sunday, April 15, at Spencer, Libby and 
Powell Funeral Home with Mass of the Christian burial Monday, April 16, in St. 
Peter's Catholic Church.  The Rev. Martin Quigley officiated.

     Honorary pallbearers were Dr. John Skirving, George Storey Sr., George 
Storey Jr., John Barker, James Kelly, Bill Booth and Farwell Booth.  Acting 
pallbearers were Jack Howe, Vernon Kelly, John Lundell, Chuck Larson, Wilbur 
Kelly, and Phil Pashek
