He was born Jan. 12, 1923, in Walla Walla, Wash., the second of eight children to Willard W. and Alice (Crall) Keeney. He was raised in Condon and graduated from Condon High School in 1943. After high school, he was drafted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served overseas and was primarily stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He married Roberta Adelia Doty on Dec. 29, 1949 in Walla Walla. They moved to The Dalles where they built their first home on Mill Creek and their second home on 13th Street. He worked as a union construction laborer building many homes and sites around The Dalles. He was a member of American Legion #19 and Laborers Local #320. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, building houses, woodworking, genealogy, collected comics and “Boys” books. He owned one of the largest collections of “Boys” story books in the West. These books included: The Hardy Boys, Horatio Alger and Big Little Books. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Roberta Keeney, The Dalles; two sisters, Billie Lacey, Hermiston; Bessie and her husband, Ron Lamereux, Renton, Wash.; his brother, William and his wife, Gloria Keeney, Klamath Falls; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Keeney; his sisters, Loa Snyder and Ida Kelty. Memorial services will be held at Cherry Park Grange on Old Dufur Road and Lambert St., in The Dalles at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, with Asa Jenson officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory. Private intunment of his cremains will be held at Threemile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery formerly known as Parklawn Cemetery. Smith Callaway Chapel is in care of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ray T. Yasui Dialysis Center, c/o Hood River Memorial Hospital, PO Box 149, Hood River, OR 97031.
