Johnston, 86, a residemt of Hood River, died June 16, 2004 at the Hood River hospital. He was born Feb. 16, 1918 in Summerville, to Victor H. and Martha (Fries) Johnston. He was raised and educated in Oregon, graduating from Imbler High School in 1935. He then served in the Army Air Corps from 1936 to 1939. He married Marie V. McManus on May 12, 1940 in Walla Walla. He worked most of his adult life as an electrician and belonged to International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 52 years. In La Grande he owned and operated Fairway Electric before moving to The Dalles in 1952 where he worked for various electrical companies including Hire Electric. During that time he worked in construction of The Dalles Dam and the Swift Creek Dam and the John Day Dam. After retiring in 1982 he moved to Hood River and owned and operated Mid- Columbia Mobile Estates. He enjoyed woodworking and repairing mechanical things, especially restoring antique cars. While living in The Dalles he belonged to the Mid- Columbia Collector’s Car Club. He also was a former member of the BPOE and the FOE. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Marie of Hood River, daughters Pat Fowler and her husband Mike, The Dalles; Colette Cox and her husband Billy, Wamic; and sons Terry Johnston and his wife, Stephanie, Woodburn and Rick Johnston and his wife Annette, Sandy; 13 grandchildren and 25 greatGrandchildren; a brother Dean Johnson, Union; and several nieces and nephews. His sister, Bernice Munhall of Baker City predeceased him as well as his parents. A celebration of life will be set for a later date.
