Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 31, 2006, 1:49 pm The Dalles Chronicle, September 19, 2006 Delta Mae Johnson, 98, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local hospital on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006. She was born on July 19, 1908 in Halsey, the oldest of four children to George Washington and Pearl Dora (Farrell) Drinkard. She grew up in Sherman County, attending Wasco High School and Monmouth Normal School, graduating in 1928. She taught school at the Old Emigrant School near Wasco and at Friend in Wasco County. She married Dr. Charles L. Gray in Portland in 1928 and they had one child. She then married Rolland M. Johnson in Wasco, in 1935 and they made their home at the family wheat ranch near Wasco, where she lived until 1997. She was very active in the Rufus Grange, State Grange and National Grange. At various times, she was a member of the Sherman High School board, the Sherman County Planning Commission, and the board for the Weir Memorial Fund. She was an active member of her community, enjoyed her life in the ranch and surrounded by her family. She is survived by her son, Charles L. and his wife Barbara Gray, Wasco; her sister, Carole Dae Brisbine, Mosier; her grandchildren, Mike and Cheryl Woods, Centerville, Wash., Robert and Rolinda (Lynna) Meakins, Hermiston; and Brett and Trena Gray, Wasco; eight great-grandchildren, Scott and Jaime Meakins, Michelle Meakins, Eric and Renate Meakins, Kate Woods, and Tiffany and Brooke Gray; two great-great-grandsons, Bryan Meakins and Ian Eppenbach, and numerous nieces and nephews. Viewing visitation will be at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home on Wednesday Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Graveside services will be held Thursday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. at Odd Fellows on 18th St. with Pastor Bob Reasonor officiating.
