She was born Sept. 20, 1919 in Heppner, the older of two daughters to Charlie R. and Gladys M. (Van Horn) Beckett. She grew up on the family wheat ranch outside Heppner and attended Liberty School, a schoolhouse built by her grandfather Beckett. She graduated from Heppner High School in 1937. During World War II, she lived in Portland and concurrently worked in the shipyards and attended beauty school. Her working career found her at Kramer’s Store for several years and for the United States Forest Service for 20-plus years. She settled in Dufur with her husband and her daughters in 1949. She was a member of the Dufur Historical Society and enjoyed spending time with her family and always looked forward to trips to Kah-Nee-Tah with friends and family. She had also enjoyed being apart of the Air Force Ground Observers Corp. during the 1950’s, and had also been a Sky Watch Assistant Chief. She is survived by her sister, Florence McCarty and her husband, Paul, Portland; daughters, Nancy Hunt, Dufur; Judy Staehnke and her husband, David, The Dalles; grandchildren, Marti Hunt, The Dalles; Rich Hunt, Dufur; Sandy Loop and her husband, Larry, The Dalles; Mike Sigman and his wife, Adrienne, Murrieta, Calif.; Mark Staehnke and his wife, Heather, Portland; great- grandchildren, Jena and Ryan Loop and Trevor and Dylan Sigman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard R. “Dick” Johnson in 1993. Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 18. Private interment will be held at a later date at Dufur Community Cemetery.
