Born December 2, 1924 on the family ranch near Shaniko, Thelda was the second daughter of Walter Edward and Faye (Howell) Beyer. She attended grade school in Shaniko and graduated valedictorian of her high school, class of 1942, in Kent, Ore. She married James E. Jackson on May 5, 1946 in Stevenson, Wash. The couple lived in Wishram for many years before settling in The Dalles in 1961. She spent the 1960s as office manager of KACI radio station, and then developed a career in banking, retiring from a local savings and loan in 1985. Always very involved in her children's activities, she was a past president of the Wishram PTA, Sunday School Superintendent, and Cub Scout den mother. She was later a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Gideon Women's Auxiliary. She loved spending time with her family and friends and enjoyed her pets, the outdoors, making jewelry and ceramics and painting. She was preceded in death by her only sister, Irene, in 1929; and her parents. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, James E. Jackson, The Dalles; son James M. Jackson, Seaside; daughter Catherine F. and spouse Ronald Elton, The Dalles; son Thomas M. Jackson and wife Vicki, McMinnville; grandson Travis Elton and wife Cheryl, The Dalles; granddaughters Holli Elton, The Dalles; Jennifer (Jackson) Thompson and spouse Jason, Ft. Hood, Texas; Jodi (Jackson) Coffman and spouse Darrell, Portland; Joanna Jackson, McMinnville; and great- grandchildren Alec and Ashley Elton, Tirzah, Austin, Cheyenne, and Brooklyn Thompson, and Zane Coffman. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18 and from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Aug. 19. Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, with Rev. Walter Hoffman officiating. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road. Memorial contributions can be made to Gideons, at P.O. Box 28, The Dalles, OR 97058.
