He was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Lee’s Summit, Mo., the second of 11 children to Emil Ernest and Gladys Georgia (Worley) Huxel. He was raised in Kansas and in his teenage years worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Council Grove, Kansas. He entered the U.S. Marines Corps and served with the 1st Marine Division as a corporal, receiving the Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal. He actively served in New Guinea, Cape Glouchester, Peleliu Island, Palau Group, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands and China. After the service, he returned to Arlington, working as a heavy equipment operator and moved to The Dalles in the early 1950’s. In the late 1950’s, he moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he owned and operated an auto body shop, and in 1968, he moved to Lake Tahoe where he continued his body shop. He returned to The Dalles in the early 1970’s working auto body repair and later returning to heavy equipment operating in Oregon and Alaska. He married Rosemary Scyneva Bothwell on Dec. 26, 1948, in Pendleton and later divorced. He was a member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Veterans’ of Foreign Wars and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, traveling and racing cars. He was a rock hound, history buff, had an interest in everything and loved adventure. He is survived by two daughters, Paula and her husband, Joe Ramos, Livermore, Calif.; and Erica and her husband, Kevin Dawley, Portland; his son, Kurtis and his wife, Valerie Huxel, The Dalles; grandchildren, Kevin Emil Huxel, Taylor Eldon Huxel, Renee Angelina Ramos and Traci Lee Ramos; two sisters, Elsie Webb, The Dalles and Betty Long, Umatilla. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life, will be held at The Dalles Eagles Lodge, Seventh and Walnut streets, on Sunday, March 21, at 1 p.m. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
