She was born Jan. 28, 1908, in Dufur, the third of four children to Melvin and Eva (Vanderpool) Sigman. She was raised in Dufur and graduated from Dufur High School in the Class of 1924. After high school, she attended Oregon State University and transferred to Oregon Normal School, in Monmouth, where she graduated with her teaching certificate in elementary education in 1927. She began teaching at Tygh Ridge, Rail Hollow and Colonel Wright Schools. She taught for ten years and married James A. Hunt on January 21, 1936, on the family ranch in Dufur and lived in Dufur where they operated a trucking business until 1947. They then bought a ranch and operated both until 1950, at which time they sold the trucking business and became full-time farmers raising wheat and cattle. After the children were older, she began to teach in Dufur for ten more years and retired in 1963. She sold the ranch when her husband, James, died and moved to The Dalles in the late 1960’s. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Dufur, was active with The Dalles Country Club and Wasco County Fair. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and pinochle. She is survived by her son, James M. Hunt, The Dalles; her daughter, Judy and her husband, Doug Sawtell, Sandy; four grandchildren, Marti Hunt, Sherwood; Rich Hunt, Dufur; Susan Dahrens, Gresham; and Jim Sawtell, Sandy; one great-granddaughter, Ashley Dahrens, Gresham; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in November 1967, her granddaughter, Jill Sawtell, in 1967, two brothers, George and Wayne Sigman and her sister, Evelyn Underhill. Graveside services will be held at The Dalles Odd Fellows Cemetery on Three Mile Road, formerly Parklawn Cemetery, on Saturday, June 5, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jerry Holland officiating. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral are in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Columbia Basin Care Facility, 1015 Webber Street, The Dalles, OR 97058 or to Dufur Methodist Church.
