She was born Sept. 17, 1910 in Blalock. She was the youngest of four children to Wash and Mary Maude (Crowder) McKinney. She grew up on the family ranch near Arlington and attended the one room Blalock School where she was known for her thin legs and nicknamed "Stovepipe." She also attended St. Mary's Academy in The Dalles, and Gresham High School, and graduated in 1928 from The The Dalles High School. On Aug. 30, 1930, she married Bernard "Barney" Honald in Portland. Their son Gary was born in Portland in 1935. They moved to The Dalles in 1936, and daughter Helen was born in 1940. As a young girl, she loved her horse, Redwing, which she rode to school each day. She enjoyed playing the violin and piano. After she was married, she and Barney attended dances every Saturday night at the Civic Center. She managed the family apartment business beginning in 1935, and was the bookkeeper for Honald, Inc. During World War II, she volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol while her husband worked at the shipyard on Swan Island in Portland. She was active on the PTA at Court Street School and a Girl Scout leader for 25 years. She enjoyed many years as a member of the Oregon Senior Women's Golf Association. She loved to travel and was known to her great-grandchildren as "Grandma Cruise." She was an excellent card player and played bridge right up to the end. Her generosity was evident by her support of many community projects including the Discovery Center, St. Mary's Academy, the Mural Society and Boys Town. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died Jan. 6, 1990. She is survived by her son, Gary Honald and daughter-in-law, Barbara, and by her daughter, Helen Honald Elsmore and son-in-law, Cliff, all of The Dalles. Her grandchildren include Pandi Honald Passey, Michael Honald and his wife Dena, Wende Dwyer-Johnsen and her husband, Andy, Theresa Dwyer Whitfield and Christopher Honald Elsmore. Her great-grandchildren are Karissa Passey, Trent Passey, Spencer Honald, Ian Johnsen, Christian Johnsen, Madisen Whitfield and Emily Whitfield. Services will be held at The Dalles Odd Fellows Memorial Mausoleum at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2005 with Father Ron Magg as celebrant.
