The Dalles Weekly Reminder, March 4, 1988
William "Bill" Holmes, 88, died Feb. 29 in Portland.

Mr. Holmes was born Nov. 4, 1899, near Grass Valley.  He resided in Sherman 
County for 65 years where he was a wheat rancher.  He retired to Lincoln City 
22 years ago.

He is survived by two sons, Robert Holmes, San Diego, Calif.; Samuel B. 
Holmes, Portland; three daughters, Jeanette Conover, Portland; Margaret M. 
Conner, Laguna Niguel, Calif.; and Dorothy A. Johansen, Portland; 16 
grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 13 nieces and nephews.  He was preceded 
in death by his wife Edina H. Holmes in 1985.

Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 4 (today) at 
11 a.m. in Grass Valley, Ore., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.  
Pallbearers will be Robert A. and Richard A. Newman, Samuel E., Steven W., 
Ronald W. and Jeffery R. Holmes and Theron Conover.  Celebrants will be Rev. 
Richard Conway and Msgr. William Stone.

The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Sherman County 
Historical Society, Moro, Ore., or St. Mary's Academy Foundation of The 
Dalles, 1112 Cherry Heights Road, The Dalles.

Smith-Callaway Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
