He was born Jan. 10, 1926, in Condon, the third of six children to Burton Lee and Nettie Mae (Wallace) Holland. He grew up and attended grade school in Condon, and graduated from Arlington High School. On Jan. 11, 1943, at age 17, he enlisted in the US Navy serving on USS Medea in the Asiatic Pacific area, and was discharged on May 15, 1946. After the war, he worked for Sunset Motors driving a tire truck around Eastern Oregon, and later became a salesman and office manager for 20 years. He then worked at Martin Marietta for ten years. He loved cherry farming and was involved in his parent’s orchard business from 1946 and in 1976 he purchased his own orchard. He was a member of The Dalles Country Club and former longtime member of The Dalles Elks Lodge. His greatest joys were his family and his dogs. He genuinely loved people and never knew a stranger. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy Leatitia Holland, his sons and their wives, Bill and Dwayna Holland and Mark and Gayle Holland, all of The Dalles; Craig and Janet Holland, Ione; his grandchildren, Stacy, Lindsey, Steven, Emily and Rachel, step grandchildren, Jason and Brian Lewis, great grandchild, Jordan Lewis, and his brothers, Dale Holland, Madras and Dick Holland, Newport. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Erin and Mary Eileen and brother, Hux. Memorials services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 14, at Gateway Presbyterian Church, 1111 Dry Hollow Road, with Dr. James Hazlett officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
