The Dalles Chronicle, April 15, 2005
     Michael (Big Mike) Hillman, 59, a former resident of The Dalles, died 
April 9, 2005 in Salem after a long battle with colon cancer.
     He was born Oct. 13, 1945 to James and Vera Hillman in Longview, Wash. 
and grew up in The Dalles and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1963.
He was a draft pick of the San Francisco Giants before serving two years years 
in the U.S. Navy. On April 6, 1968 he married Merlene in The Dalles and in 
1976 they settled in Salem with their two children, Lisa and Mike.
     His priority was his family. He had a passion for baseball and enjoyed 
fishing and camping. He was an avid supporter of youth sports, coaching 
baseball for 40-plus years. He volunteered for 10 years for Parrish Little 
League and several years for American Legion baseball.
     He was a North Salem Athletic Booster Club member.
     Survivors include his wife, Merlene and their children, Lisa and husband, 
Tom; Mike and his wife, Ann; and Taj; grandchildren, Makenzie, Brody and 
Jacob; his mother, Vera Hillman; brothers, Bill Hillman and his wife, Julie; 
and Jim Hillman; an aunt, Donna and her husband, Ray; his extended family, 36 
nieces and nephews; his beloved dog, Maggie, and all the ball players who 
touched his heart.
     He was preceded in death by his father, James Hillman; in-laws, Merle and 
Anne and brother-in-law Buster.
     Funeral services will be Saturday, April 16, at 4 p.m. at City View 
Funeral Home in Salem.
     Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society; or the local Little 
League organization.
     Arrangements are by City View Funeral Home in Salem.
